How to install MySQL on Windows

We’re going to install MySQL Community Edition, which is the free edition of MySQL. It includes a database server (MySQL Server) and a GUI database client (MySQL Workbench), among other tools.

  1. Go to MySQL Community Downloads.
  2. Click on MySQL Installer for Windows.

  3. Download the web community installer.

  4. Run the installer you downloaded. On the Setup Type select Developer Default and click Next.

  5. The installer will report if there are any missing requirements. Click Execute to let the installer resolve them automatically. You might see a couple of windows pop up for each of the items being installed; click through them to continue installing the requirements.

  6. On the next window click Execute to install the various MySQL products. Then click Next.

  7. On the Product Configuration window, click Next. The following windows show the configuration to be selected for MySQL Server. In most cases, you will click Next to accept the default configuration and move on to the next window. If any changes need to be made in the configuration, I will point it out on the window screenshot.

  8. We’re now ready to apply the configuration for MySQL Server. Click Execute, then Finish.

  9. The following window is for configuring MySQL Router. Just click Finish.

  10. Next you will configure the samples. Select the MySQL Server instance to install the samples in and enter its root password, then click Check. You should see a check mark indicating your connection succeeded. Then click Next.

  11. Click Execute then Finish to complete the samples configuration.

  12. On the next window select the option to Start MySQL Workbench after Setup and click Finish.

  13. MySQL Workbench opens on the welcome screen. Under MySQL Connections, double-click on the local instance to connect to the database.

  14. Enter your root password. You can select to save your password in the vault, so you don’t have to enter it each time you connect to the database. Click OK.

  15. MySQL Editor opens. Click on the Schemas tab. You will see a list of the sample databases you installed to your left and an empty query window to your right. You’re now ready to start writing SQL queries!
